Patricia 's pen name is patH. In 1999, Pat 's poetry mentor, Marie Goodwin asked her if she wrote poetry? Pat responded no but I appreciate the spoken and written word.Marie then suggested Patricia to write a poem about something she loved. Trish at first was reluctant but eventually wrote a poem entitled " Image of Music. " Marie praised her poem and asked for a copy . She even secretly entered it into a poetry contest. Around 2 months later, Marie called Pat frantically on the phone and screamed "you won , you won ". Pat asked won what ? Marie responded you won the poetry contest, I entered your poem in. Trish had won honorable mention and later the President's Award from the National Author's Registry. From winning two awards from the same poem and compliments from readers, it boosted Pat's confidence! Patricia has been writing poetry ever since. Now she claims she can not stop writing if she tried, it is almost automatic as breathing.
Patricia has read poetry all over the city of Chicago: at colleges, local venues, libraries, funerals, weddings and literary events. She has been on channel 19 discussing her poetry with her mentor. Pat has her poetry in nine different anthologies. Trish has written a spiritual chapbook called " Beyond the Flow ". Some of her poetry can be bought at Studio 71 Art Gallery in Chicago's South Shore community.
During her poetry career, Pat has had the honor of meeting some renown poets: Former Chicago's Poet Laureate Gwendolyn Brooks (late), Oscar Brown Jr. (late) Margaret Burroughs (late) Nikki Giovanni, Sam Greenlee, Haki Madhabuti, Sterling Plump and Sonia Sanchez . Pat thanks three people for being instrumental for her becoming an award - winning poet: The Creator, (mentor) Marie Goodwin and (mom)Wanda Travis. Without those three I would not be the poet I am today. She also thanks the poets before her whom has set the trail for other African Americans who can and do speak freely and passionately!!!

JAZZ INTONATION a poem collaboration by Shirlena Rudder and Patricia Travis (c) November 4, 2014
jazz intonation, sharing herstoric information no need for preparation just a demonstration musical admiration my thinking cap is on like before, during and after graduation
often caught unwittingly sitting quiet nothing feeling subtle appearance aqua marine turning up collars caring about nothing except influencing taste in its pleasant aggressive progression some think polyphonic prose ain’t up but it’s high without chemicals down it’s busy thumping bass puffing big jowls through trumpets whipping chills sensitive clinking cymbals swimming potion lustrous vocals…music switches places background lyrics imposing rap upon prism lobes can’t do nothing with this… voluntary subject of interpretations, distortions impotent sucker..frigid mix
so jazz
mister, bane of existence sprained futility reducing fade to black
so we sip jazz tonic
very slowly sipping speaking patiently never zipping not wasting words - ink dripping abundantly reed licking wet lipping occasionally era flipping harmonically tune shipping mentally traveling unconsciously slipping into reality masterfully equipping oral ear pleasure drumstick gripping student musicians listening hard melodically nipping at first green but the veterans are hipping
freewill
does it give poets the right to hurt whenever they quill ?
does it gives perverts the right to gawk and feel ?
does it gives workers the right on the job to just slack and chill
does it give the wealthy the right to legally steal
does it give directors the right to twist the real
does it give the government the right to make the poor struggle daily getting 3 meals
does it make Christians not snap and always be on even keel
does it give murderers the right to kill at will
does it give witnesses the right to not squeal
does it give a third party to be called a third wheel
does it give marchers the right to protest with vigor and zeal
does it give communities to have people that drug deal
does it give females the right to wear 8 inch heels
does it give adults to feel their way is always ideal
does it mean doctors with cures can hold back and not heal
does it mean you are given the highest props because you are a navy seal
does it mean because one does not know the difference I should act like turquoise is teal
does it mean because I get meat from a well - known butcher he can give me steak when I wanted veal
does it mean anyone adult can by one even it if pollutes the world ( an automobile)
does it mean a drunk driver can pretend his car is made out of steel
does it mean just because something was forbidden from fear knowledge must remained sealed
does it mean just because your audience may not agree with you, you still should not reveal
does it mean just because you are outside in the public - you can not praise God or kneel
does it mean you will be uncool because of ignorance around you should keep truth concealed
does it mean because I asked these questions it will cause a gripe or appeal ??
